Jack Warner The Man

Tomorrow may be a defining day in the political future of the colourful and
controversial Austin “Jack” Warner. If he is victorious in the epic showdown
in the heartland of Chaguanas West it will signal not only a new dawn for
politics in T&T, but also a revival for the man who is labelled by the
people as “Uncle Jack” because of his many contributions to the
constituency.

For 70-year-old Warner, interim political leader of the newly-formed
Independent Liberal Party (ILP), the sun could shine brightly according to
several people interviewed last Tuesday and Wednesday. One constituent said,
“He is a man for the people and always with the people.” The former Fifa
vice-president, government minister and chairman of the United National
Congress (UNC) served as MP since 2007 but resigned in April this year.

His youthful opponents in the fight for representation of the people are
Khadijah Ameen, acting UNC chairman, and Avinash Singh of the People’s
National Movement (PNM). But the people who spoke with the Sunday Guardian
said Ameen’s only asset was that she represented the traditionalist UNC
voter and was not known for delivery of services to people. As for Singh,
they believed he was unlikely to amass sufficient votes that would impact
the election.

The preferred choice of candidate was Warner. Constituents argued that
despite the allegations of corruptions surrounding Fifa and Concacaf, he was
“the man.” The Sunday Guardian traversed areas such as Pierre Road,
Felicity, Munroe Road, Warner Village, Bejucal, Warren and Frederick
Settlement. Other areas like Charlieville, La Paille and Orchard Gardens
also form Chaguanas West. While many people spoke freely and willing, they
refused to give their names or be photographed.

Warner the performer
In almost every nook and cranny people uttered the same sentiment. “Warner
is the man.” “Warner is a performer.” “Warner do for we.” “The man perform.”
It was mid-morning on Tuesday. Caroni Savannah Road and environs were
bustling. A group of people was gesturing on the sidewalk as they walked
with their ILP jerseys in hand. Two aged men standing by the newly-opened
gas station in Charlieville were engaged in a conversation. They gave their
names as Hemdath and Praim.

Asked how they felt about the by-election, Hemdath wasted no time in
replying. “They cyah put nobody else here. People only want to talk but they
eh know what kind ah work Warner do. “We get road and drain. He take money
and hold all sort of celebrations in the year. “Warner coming back right
here in Chaguanas West.” Praim agreed. He said Warner was determined to help
people, and he was content with that. “Nobody could say Warner turn he back
on them here.”

A young man in Felicity said he would never support the UNC because of the
way it treated Warner. “Warner delivers on his promises so why we going and
vote for Khadijah? “She is a failure and a non-performer who trying to fight
a man who there and who perform. He will not stop performing.” In Chaguanas,
a woman said the UNC would fall apart because of tomorrow’s results. “I am a
woman, but I will not support her. I don’t even know anything about her.”

Montano joins Warner’s ILP

One-time People’s National Movement (PNM) senator and former United National Congress (UNC) and Congress of the People (COP) frontliner Robin Montano last night debuted on Jack Warner’s Independent Liberal Party (ILP) platform. Warner announced him as the party’s new interim chairman at the final major political meeting in Felicity, Chaguanas.

Addressing the crowd, Montano said he had decided to return to politics and the ILP after a seven-year hiatus because he was disgusted with the “crapaud politics” that was now passing as politics in T&T. He noted that Warner, who had stepped down as the UNC chairman, national security minister and as Chaguanas MP in April, had had the support of the 31 party groups in the constituency when he sought to return to contest the by-election under the UNC banner.

However, he said Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who often used the mantra “the voice of the people is the voice of God,” had still sidelined Warner for her favoured choice, Khadijah Ameen. Montano said Warner had served the people of the constituency well and deserved their vote on Monday based on his performance alone. He promised to stand shoulder to shoulder with Warner, noting that the party was an even bigger threat to the People’s National Movement than the UNC.

Montano had served as a PNM senator under the first Patrick Manning administration (1991-95), but subsequently fell out with Manning and the PNM. In more recent years, he had supported the COP, but most recently had “parked up” from active politics and had been writing a political blog. In his most recent blog posting on Tuesday, he supported Warner’s Chaguanas West bid, saying Warner had run the most modern game.

Last night, Montano told the T&T Guardian he had spoken to Warner last week and on Wednesday, Warner had met with him to discuss his situation. Meanwhile, during a walkabout at Chadee Lohar Road, Charlieville, Persad-Bissessar said she expected anything from the opposition over the next two days. “When you get to be my age expect anything. It’s the silly season,” she told reporters when asked what she expected from the opposing parties in the race with the election three days away.

Jack Warner Great Politician

Jack Warner- Personality

Jack Warner is a disciplined, committed and responsible person. His health initiative is a part of his vision to best represent residents of Chaguanas West. Unfortunately, Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has found T&T is the world’s sixth most obese nation, with 30 percent of adults overweight. In that context, Jack Warner’s the medical scheme is going to go a long way in tackling the problem. Now that is something that the residents want to see a politician initiate, not hurling allegations like the UNC has become experts at… and shamelessly at that!!!

Health Initiative

Jack Warner’s health initiative will prove to be a model for other neighbouring States to follow…This enterprise will provide a holistic, mobile healthcare service that would include doctors, dieticians, personal trainers, nurses and physiotherapists coming to you at your home or workplace. This service is for everyone in Chaguanas West, from children to elderly bedridden patients. This is a hurray moment and we must all be thankful for such initiative!

Jack Warner’s Appeal

Jack Warner’s appeal and his ability to interact warmly with his constituents, many of whom he knows by name, is going to be the clincher! He is affectionate and kind and reflects a personality that is becoming of a public figure. He wants to do good and that is his true asset. People of Trinidad and Tobago deserve honest politician!

JACK WARNER AHEADS THE POLLS BY 74 PER CENT OF THE RATING IN HIS FAVOUR!

c1

The inevitable is beginning to happen! At least, we now have an idea as to who will sweep the Chaguanas West election… Interestingly, a new poll has shown that Jack Warner has garnered a massive 48% of approval ratings for the July 29 bye-election. It is a reflection of the man’s charisma and genuine concern and commitment for his people. United National Congress (UNC) candidate Khadijah Ameen is languishing with 23 per cent rating and the People’s National Movement (PNM) candidate Avinash Singh has three per cent. This is a clear sign of things to come!

The biggest reason for Jack Warner’s lead in the approval ratings is his personal charm, with a favourability rating of 74 per cent. Even among the undecided voters, his favourability is at 62 per cent. This goes to show that the people of the Chaguanas West constituency have declared their stand and are already in a celebratory mood. Mr Warner’s personal appeal has translated into the creation of a new political force, ILP, which is effectively competing head-on against the UNC brand. I think UNC’s days are numbered!

It is really amusing that at least 6 percent of the voters do not even recognise the name of UNC candidate Khadijah Ameen! Polls show that even among those who are thinking of voting for her, 13 per cent had no opinion of her. In effect, she is basically a non-entity! PNM’s candidate Avinash Singh should pull out of the elections and save some face. He is at the bottom of the ladder with a meagre 3 percent approval rating. The poll observed that he is not even guaranteed to win majority support among even traditional PNM supporters, many of whom plan to vote for Jack Warner. It may very well be a sweep for Mr Warner.

The UNC is trying to bring the issue of race into the Chaguanas by-election and destroy the unity of the community. UNC’s Housing Minister, Dr Roodal Moonilal is trying to divide the people in order to score cheap political points by bringing race into the politics. It is a shameful act and we the people can look through his tactics. It is in bad taste that anyone would try to divide Chaguanas West along racial lines!

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissesser probably does not realise in the heat of the election campaigning, but she should take a step back and realise that she is contradicting herself blatantly. After defending Mr Jack Warner and admitting to the whole world that he is her hardest working MP, when Mr Warner was part of the Government, she has now reversed her opinions to fight an election. That’s just petty, isn’t it? In my humble opinion, the Prime Minister now sounds like the Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissesser’s composure appears to be less than self-assured and in some cases her appeals to the residents of Chaguanas West seem desperate. Imagine the UNC campaign taking on the position that Jack Warner is attacking Ms Khadijah Ameen because she is a woman! I think that position is highly unfortunate, petty, shameful and irrelevant. It sounds like an appeal for a sympathetic vote rather than seeking the same on the basis of merit.

This Prime Minister’s intent has been exposed and she may not have even realised. It very clear now that Mrs Kamla Persad-Bissesser can shamelessly lower herself to any level to make sure that she and her party remain at the helm of affairs. Last Friday, in her animated speech, she threatened the Chaguanas West constituents and she was not even subtle. She stated that if the people voted Mr Jack Warner to power, they will not get any benefits. Prime Minister made these statements with cameras filming and on a public address system that was recorded and televised.

For someone who is flying high and riding on the wave of popularity to be threatened is a standard occurrence. No wonder, a threat on life has been made against Jack Warner, who has proved to be the darling of the constituents. This is a sorry state of affairs and whoever is stooping down to this level will sooner rather than later be exposed! Mr Warner has already filed a complaint with the police and necessary precautions have been taken in this direction. But Mr Warner is a brave man and will not live in a cocoon. He will come out and do what he needs to do and get bogged down by any impending danger. We wish him all the best and hope that he is safe to lead the people of Chaguanas West.

Jack Warner’s Stepping Stone to Success

Jack Warner has launched his own party to regain the Chaguanas West seat. The party is known as the Independent Liberal Party (ILP). Warner feels that he has been betrayed by the United National Congress (UNC), a party of which he was earlier a member.

The symbol of his party is the sugarcane next to an oil rig, enshrined by two circles. “The sugarcane represents our coming together from Africa and India and conjuring up images of the struggle from slavery to indentureship from which we have been emancipated and remains a solid remainder that never again will we be enslaved physically, mentally or politically,” Warner said.

Jack Warner said sugarcane and the oil rig represented the struggle and tears of the people of Chaguanas West. “The oil is the bloodline of our economy…and with sugarcane, the message is, our history will not be forgotten,” Warner said.

Warner said the party’s colour, green, embodied ideas associated with fertility, life and growth. It was the colour of beginnings, he noted.By associating with the colour green, his supporters were demanding a society with “less crime, less corruption, less immorality and much more integrity. Green, he underlined, “symbolises a people who are well balanced, in harmony and are of a sound mind, and represents good judgment and morality”.

Jack Warner is a disciplined, committed and responsible person.Jack Warner’s appeal and his ability to interact warmly with his constituents, many of whom he knows by name, is going to be the clincher! He is affectionate and kind and reflects a personality that is becoming of a public figure. He wants to do good deeds and that is his true asset. Why we should bring Warner back??

2011-05-27-7-1A_Jack_Warner_2

With deep regret we have learnt of the decision of Jack Warner’s voluntary resignation. Warner has been a top-ranked cabinet minister in two surveys and served at times as T&T’s acting prime minister. He has held the posts of Minister of Works and Transport, Minister of Works and Infrastructure and Minister of National Security.

He has developed football to a great extent in T&T as well as the region. A great leader and an inspiring minister, Warner’s contributions to Trinbago cannot remain unnoticed.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Captain Dwight Yorke said: “It was on Jack’s shoulders that we made it to the World Cup Finals. Without him, it would never have been possible.” There are many who occupy high positions in various fields but Warner has used his position to contribute much to football and the ministry.

OLIVER CAMPS, president of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF), has lauded the contribution made by Jack Warner. “For several years, we have benefitted from Warner’s support and, by great extension, his position in FIFA,” Camps noted. “Had it not been for his role, this region would not have experienced some of the benefits brought to it, in terms of the various facilities, football development and assistance programme and, even the staging of (FIFA) World Cups (the Under-17 men in 2001 and Under-17 women in 2010) and, for that, we remain truly grateful”, said Camps.

Sports Minister, Anil Roberts praised Warner for his long service in FIFA, CONCACAF and CFU. “Warner has moved very high up into FIFA and therefore Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean and CONCACAF region have been the recipients of many benefits over the years, not only new bodies being formed (CFU) but also management funds. Trinidad and Tobago was able to host two (FIFA) Under-17 World Cups (and) the coaches and technical staff that he was able to attract,” said Roberts.

Praising Warner for “changing the culture of the police service” during the 10 months that he served as Minister of National Security, Commissioner Williams said that he was “an exceptional minister” by his work ethic to get things done.

While he remains a Member of Parliament for Chaguanas West, we wish him and his family the very best for the future and particularly in his role in the continuing development of Trinidad and Tobago as he contests the coming elections.
